What should I look for in a real estate agent if I need someone to preview homes while I am moving from out of town?

Look for an agent who will preview homes on your behalf with the same scrutiny they'd apply if they were buying it themselves, and who will tell you honestly when a home isn't worth your flight or your time.

Buying from out of town means you're trusting someone else's eyes and judgment before you ever set foot in a property. That's a bigger ask than a typical buyer-agent relationship, so the agent's honesty matters more than usual. You want someone who will walk through a home, note the things photos don't show (traffic noise, a rough smell, a room that's smaller than it looks online, a repair that's more serious than it appears), and give you a straight recommendation on whether it's worth your time to see in person.

Ask a potential agent directly how they handle previews: do they send video walkthroughs, do they point out flaws unprompted, and are they willing to tell you a home isn't right for you even if that means fewer showings when you're in town. An agent who's comfortable saying "skip this one" is more valuable to an out-of-town buyer than one who says yes to everything.
